Teratogenicity of Fumonisin in the Developing Chick Embryo

Abstract
Teratogenic effects of fumonisin were assesed. Fumonisin, at doses 0.0005mg. 0.005mg and 0.05mg/chick egg. Was injected on day 4 of incubation via air cell and morphological abnormality were examined on day 7, 9, 11, 15, 18 and 21 of incubaton.
The
LD50
of fumonisin in the developing chick embryo was 0.0127mg/rgg. Body weights of group treated with high and middle dose of fumonisin were significantly lower than that of untreated control group. Body lenth and fore-limb of all treated group were
significantly shorter than those of untreated control group Hind-limb. Claw and beak lengths of group treated with high dose. And beak length of low dose of fumonisin were significantly lower than that of untreated control group. Curled mandibule
and
deormed legs were shown in the group treated with high and middle dose of fumonisin. From the above findings, we confirmed that fumonisin induces acute toxicitiy and potential teratogenicity especially in the skeleton of posterior limb and
madibule
in
the developing chick embryos.
